Coggins and health certificates for interstate horse travel
This is general education for owners planning a haul — not legal or veterinary advice. Always confirm current rules with your veterinarian and the destination state.
Coggins (EIA test)
A Coggins test screens for equine infectious anemia. Many states and events require a current negative result before horses travel or gather. Timing windows vary — your vet will know what “current” means for your route.
Health certificate / CVI
An interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate) is commonly required when horses cross state lines. It is issued by a veterinarian after examining the horse. Validity windows are often short (commonly counted in days, not months) — plan the exam close to ship day.
What we need as your hauler
Bring the papers your vet says the route requires, plus emergency contacts and any medication notes. Use our printable checklist so nothing is forgotten at the gate.
Requirements change. Destination farms, shows, and state animal health offices may ask for more than the minimum. When in doubt, call your vet before you book the trailer.
