Summer horse hauling: heat safety on Southeast roads
Carolina and Florida summers are hard on horses in trailers. Here is how we think about heat when we haul from Raleigh — and as we expand toward Ocala.
Ventilation first
Our slant-load runs with multiple fans and open airflow planning. Still, parked asphalt and midday sun can overwhelm any trailer. We prefer earlier starts and shade stops when forecasts spike.
Timing the run
For long corridors (for example Raleigh to Ocala), we plan around the hottest stretch of the day when we can. Tell us if your horse is heat-sensitive so we can adjust departure windows.
Water and rest
Horses need water access on long trips. We build rest into longer hauls rather than racing the clock. If your vet has specific hydration or electrolyte instructions, send them with the booking.
What owners can do
- Avoid shipping a horse that is already running a fever
- Use light, breathable sheets only if your hauler agrees they are safe in heat
- Have water ready at pickup and delivery
- Read our prep checklist
